Dessert discovery: Korean ice cream with red beans

Posted by Cat Ramos

I am not exactly a fan of beans. But I take exception with red beans. I love that it is not overly sweet and goes well with coffee or tea.

My friend Minnie told me about this ice cream she had over the weekend. It is vanilla ice cream topped with red bean paste and encased in soft wafer shaped like a fish. Red beans and ice cream sounded like my thing so today, we went to this Korean store in Burgos Circle (The Fort), which sells Melona ice cream and other yummy stuff.

Now I’ve had Melona before but I wasn’t very impressed. I was hoping the fish one wouldn’t disappoint. And wow! I loved it. Vanilla ice cream…you can’t go wrong with such a basic flavour. But this one tasted a little different. A little buttery and so creamy. It is topped with a thin layer of red bean paste. You also get those little bits of beans, nice texture. Then all that goodness is covered by a “wafer cone” shaped like a fish.

I love, love, love this! It tastes and looks really special and only costs P38 at HanYang.

I will definitely buy this again and again. Even if it means I have to walk under the hot sun just for my red bean fix. 🙂
