LOL-wut book titles + my holiday reading lista

Posted by Cat Ramos

The other night, I passed by the bookstore for some last minute Christmas shopping and on the ‘Fresh from the Box’ table, this book caught my eye:

Android Karenina

Ahahaha, really now! I bought ‘Anna Karenina‘ when I was in high school and I have never finished the novel despite several attempts. (No offense to Tolstoy, of course) Yes, even after college, I was still attempting. Maybe if I get Android Karenina, I might be able to finish it??

Quirk Classics publishes books like ‘Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters‘ – literature classics mixed with pop culture. I read the reviews and people are raving over these books! Once I get over my reading backlog, I might pick up one of these ‘quirks’ from Fully Booked 😉

I got some extra time off from work, and I am planning to just sit back, read, read, and read. Here are the titles in my Christmas reading list:

Eat, Pray, Love (Elizabeth Gilbert) – I’ve never seen the movie but I heard it’s great (I didn’t know Brad Pitt produced it). I got interested in the book when my Kris Kringle ‘baby’ asked for this. My teammate ‘Sunshine’ lent me her slightly used copy. As in, she hasn’t finished it. 😉

How to Find Extraordinary Joy @ Work (Jon Escoto) – Published by Shepherd’s Voice (Hi Bro. Bo!), this book is written by Kerygma preacher and K5 singer Jon Escoto (who I think looks like my childhood friend). The book contains 40 anecdotes and stories of inspiration and reflection, with a short prayer at the end of each. Also, there are suggested ‘random acts of kindness’ for you to do at the office, like bring treats for your co-workers or telling someone you’re praying for him/her. The readings are applicable to any situation in daily life, not just work-related; this is why I love the book so much. It is suggested that you read only one chapter a day, mull over it, pray then do the act of kindess thing. ‘Sunshine’ told me she’s getting her own copy, as she needs to find joy at work.

Every working class hero needs to read this!

The Master Key System (Charles Haanel) – One of the books mentioned several times in the bestseller, The Secret, this was written many years ago, in 1912 (the year when the Titanic sank, hehe). The book is 24 chapters long, with each chapter to be read and digested in one week. After the text in each chapter, there is an activity designed to help the reader put into practice whatever he had just read. In my opinion, it is very comprehensive, somewhat repetitive but that is to be expected as the author wanted to drill the ideas right to the reader’s head. I am on chapter…one. Gawd, 23 more weeks to go 😀 (A PDF version is available for free download at www.thesecret.tv)

I'll probably get to review this again in...July 2011!

Ask and It is Given (Esther and Jerry Hicks + Abraham) – I’ve always wanted to read an Abraham-Hicks book, especially this one, because of the glowing reviews. Unfortunately, it is not very easy to find an ‘esoteric’ book in Manila. One day I was just thinking how great it might be to finally get my hands on this particular title. I got off work a little early and dropped by National Bookstore. I wasn’t planning on buying, I just wanted to browse and kill time. When I got to the Self Help section, this book was practically screaming at me! If that isn’t the law of attraction at work, then I don’t know what it is 😀 Unlike novels, books like this aren’t meant to be read in one sitting. You need to read then take time to digest it, making sure you understood what you read. What I learned from their style is they love to use a lot of ‘funky’ words and phrases like ‘Leading Edge of Thought’ and ‘Vortex’; good thing they provided a glossary at the back — I kept on checking what the words meant 😛

In less than a week of reading, I’ve already manifested things like my favourite food, more books, a career adviser + new Ebay customers and I am really thankful and happy for this new-found knowledge. 😀

Wishing everyone a very blessed Christmas! Enjoy the holidays ♥
