The Voice season 2: The surprising twist with instant eliminations

Posted by Cat Ramos

Whoever thought of instant elimination must have had too much to drink.

After the artists’ quarterfinal performances, the coaches have to let go of one. It was a little harsh to make the coaches go through such a tough decision at this point in the competition. Is that even a necessary step in the process?

But Adam Levine did have a valid point when he said at least the coaches would have a hand in choosing which among their artists will advance further, as the voting process is much like a popularity contest. Just because one received the most votes doesn’t mean that he or she has the best voice.

So how did the first two teams fare?

Team Xtina

  • Jesse Campbell (Halo) – His voice is like the Midas touch — whatever he sings turns into gold. Had it been someone else, he probably wouldn’t do the Beyonce song any justice. Loved the pictures of him and his beautiful daughter in the background, just perfect for the song.
  • Ashley dela Rosa (Foolish Games) – A Jewel song turned to rock, wow. Great version so great job, Xtina. Great job to Ashley too for really rocking it. I loved her emotional version.
  • Lindsey Pavao (Part of Me) – I love the Katy Perry original and while I liked Lindsey’s version too, there were some issues I had with her pitch. But I am not sure if that was part of her style.
  • Chris Mann (Living La Vida) – WOW! What a great song. Such an amazing choice by Xtina. Chris is showing everybody that he is so much more than a pretty opera face. Haha.
  • Xtina eliminates Jesse Campbell — what a surprise and a huge letdown. Although I think I get her point too. Jesse shouldn’t worry — everyone has seen how talented a singer he is and it is all good from here.

At the results show, America votes for Chris and he is saves from elimination, leaving Ashley and Lindsey to duke it out for the final spot in Team Xtina. I wasn’t feeling Ashley’s performance of the song You and I, which was a shame because she did it when it mattered the most. On the other hand, Lindsey’s very emotional performance of Please Don’t Go was so awesome it made me cry a bit. Haha. Then I saw Xtina crying so I cried some more. :p Somehow, I get a Dolores O’Riordan vibe from the performance – I don’t know why but she’s really great.

I love her hair and I love whoever did it to her. Also, she reminds me a bit of Lisbeth Salander from the US version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

In the end, Xtina chooses Lindsey to advance to the semis with Chris Mann.

    Team Blake

  • RaeLynn (She’s Country) – Young as she is, she really knows how to work the crowd like a pro. I also love how well she interacts with the band.
  • Jordis Unga (A Little Bit Stronger) – Aww, what a sweet, beautiful song. Turns out that Jordis really does good when it comes to more emotional songs like Wild Horses and this one.
  • Erin Willett (Set Fire To The Rain) – Woooow. Erin just keeps getting better and better every single time. This is my favourite so far.
  • Jermaine Paul (Against All Odds) – Jermaine never really messes up. If Team Xtina has Jesse, Blake has Jermaine. He is perfect all the time. I hope Alicia Keys already found a new backup vocalist :p
  • Blake lets go of Jordis, going with America’s votes previously. It was surprising too because she did really good in her last 2 performances.

At the results show, Jermaine emerged on top with the most votes, which is no surprise at all.

In the final song round, Erin just lorded it over RaeLynn with her song Proud Mary. I wasn’t feeling the song but when the tempo kicked it, Eein showed that she has a lot more aces up her sleeve. Her dad must be really happy, seeing her like this.

In a few days, we will see Team Adam and Team Ceelo in the hot seat. I hope the coaches have prepared mentally for that episode — it will be so tough!
