French progress: week of 7-13 July 2014
Earlier this month, I decided to intensify studying French and scale back on Japanese and Hungarian. I used to spend an equal amount of time and effort in all 3 languages. But the divide-and-conquer strategy wasn’t working too well for me, especially with my busy...
Thoughts about my stint as an English reading volunteer
Teaching is one of our company’s activities for corporate social responsibility (CSR). Every Friday each week, my teammates, boss and I worked as volunteer teachers. Together with other volunteers from the company, we go to a public school in Taguig to spend one hour teaching...
Back to language teaching?
Almost 3 months into my job as an economic specialist, I got an additional role at work: Tagalog teacher for my boss. As he will be based in Manila for 2 years, he is very keen on learning the language. He is married to a...
Drowning in office and school trabajo
For the past two weeks, I’m up to my neck with stuff to do at work and at school. It does not look like things are improving much at the office. I still can’t go on holidays any time I want, among others. I’m seriously...
To “handouts” or not to “handouts”?
That is sometimes not the question in my school. I heard from one of my former students about the use of handouts in our Japanese school. Basically, we give out handouts containing supplementary exercises and other notes not in the books (like Mojica-sensei’s keigo and...
My students are addicted to nattou — NOT
Last Saturday, I brought some nattou (or “natto”, if you will — however, I am quite anal about romaji so there) for my morning Japanese class. Save for Takumi-san who is part Japanese, everyone has not heard of nattou before. I had 3 small containers...
For my ‘daiji na oshiego’
Last Saturday was the last day for my PM Nihongo class. After the final exams, we had deelish pancit canton from Mushroom Burger c/o Nash-san. 24日はナシュさんの誕生日でした。I also bought pizza for everyone. As a parting gift, I taught them one of my favorite songs from my...
(It’s tough being a teacher)
Kyoushi wa tsurai yo!* I love teaching Japanese, and I look forward to my classes every week. I love what I do and I’m being paid to do what I love. However, after almost a year of teaching with no worries, reality hit me…it’s tough...
Day 2 – Teacher observation
As students of the Teacher Training Course, we are required to sit in Elem 1 and 2 classes to observe different teaching techniques from more experienced senseis. The first class we attended as a group is Keli-sensei’s Elem 2 morning class. I have to say...
Career blah
I officially started my new job yesterday (checks time)…on Friday, May 4th. But I already reported to the office on the 2nd and 3rd for trainings. I can’t say much about it since I am only a few days old into the job. Will post...
