The Voice season 2: Let the Battle Rounds begin!

On the first telecast day of the Battle Rounds on AXN Asia, I made sure I got home way before 7:15pm. Like everyone else, I’m excited to see how the Voice hopefuls will be paired up. 😀

Here are the interesting match ups for night 1 of the Battle Rounds (winners’ names are underlined):

1. Tony Lucca vs Chris Cauley (U2) – I love Chris Cauley and I thought he would kill the song. Wrong! Tony is just this raw rocker that made Chris sounded mellow. A well-deserved win for Tony.

2. Adley Stump vs RaeLynn (Free Fallin’) – Adley has a better range and her voice is so rich. It was obvious who was the better singer. I know a lot of people were surprised by Blake’s decision.

3. Chris Mann vs. Monique Benabou (The Power of Love) – Who knew opera man would kill this song?? Mainstream Monique and Opera Chris sounded really cool together: great harmony and even greater ending. It was just obvious, though, that Chris had the upper hand in the song.

4. Cheesa vs. Angie Johnson (Total Eclipse of the Heart) – I dreaded this match up, but I am really hoping for the best for Angie. During the rehearsals, she sounded really good with Ne-yo. And I was thinking, yeah, this is it! For me, Angie has more range and depth to her voice, and she can reach the higher notes better. But when Cheesa did what Babyface told her (to hold the vibratto at a certain part of the song), her performance was epic. Up until Ceelo’s decision, I was unsure of who to choose. While Angie is one of my early favourites and I think she’s one helluva singer, Cheesa really deserved to move on to the Live Show. Great job, Angie! Never stop singing!

5. Jordis Unga vs. Brian Fuente (Ironic) – I felt that Jordis is more on pitch than Brian, she sounded more powerful yet had more emotion. In some parts of the song, Brian seemed like her back up vocalist rather than a competitor. Blake said the performance “sucked” and I thought it was kind of mean for him to say so. Oh well.

6. Jesse Campbell vs. Anthony Evans (If I Ain’t Got You) – Definitely the best performance of the night!! Yes, Jesse’s the more technical singer while Anthony’s the emotional one. But they sounded so great together, it could have gone either way. I loved Anthony’s high note near the end and Jesse’s “b-b-baby” thing was epic too. Even surly Blake Shelton had to react to that — and he was looking bored the entire night. WOW! This is the best Battle Round performance so far and I doubt any other pair can top this.
