Go Uste! Take that, itay. Haha. 😀
MBL Open champion University of Santo Tomas-Ironcon Builders rode on the hot hands of Karim Abdul and Kevin Ferrer to bring down Letran College, 77-60, and serve notice of its title aspirations in the 2011 MBL Invitational basketball championship at the Lyceum gym in Intramuros, Manila.
Abdul, the Tigers’ 6-7 “Tower of Power”, asserted himself in the shaded area and came away with 18 points and 12 rebounds despite the Knights’ tight, double-teaming defense to power UST-Ironcon to victory in this prestigious, season-ending tournament supported by Cebuana Lhuillier, Dickies Underwear, PRC Couriers and WG Diner.
Ferrer added 16 points, including a pair of three-point shots that helped the Tigers keep the Knights at bay in the fourth quarter.
Three other mainstays — Aljon Mariano, Clark Bautista and Louie Vigil — also scored in double figures for UST-Ironcon, which is being handled by coach Pido Jarencio and manager Jaime Lim.
“The boys played hard even without two of our starters and kept their composure even after they (Knights) tried to keep the game close and rallied in the early part of the fourth period,” said Jarencio, referring to ace gunner Jeric Teng and playmaker Jeric Fortuna, who are now playing with the Philippine team in the Southeast Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia.
